BIOGRAPHY
She is a Pilates Teacher of Teachers, biomechanist and ergonomist holding Master’s of Science degrees in Ergonomics and Biomechanics from New York University (NYU). She travels the world teaching teachers of all styles of Pilates, though her vocabulary of exercises is classical. Her ability to cross over the boundaries of style in Pilates comes from her remarkable understanding of how the human body works, how people learn, how the apparatus works… She has an unusual ability for taking the most complicated concepts and turning them into simple nuggets of information that you can immediately use.
Prior to her Pilates life, Shari performed in musical theater. A successful singer, dancer and actress, she performed across the stages and screens of the world. Her Pilates practice and education began in NYC during the last 6 months of a 1.5 year period of physical therapy in her recovery from partial paralysis. You can read about her story From Paralysis to Pilates here: PDF. Once Shari found her passion for Pilates had overtaken her love of performing, she started The Vertical Workshop.
Though Shari’s Pilates vocabulary is classical with Romana Kryzanowska training her to be a Pilates teacher and then as the Power Pilates Director of West Coast Education and Lead Teacher Trainer for many years, Shari firmly believes that all styles of Pilates can give rise to effective work! We all share the same goals for our clients even if the way we get there is different. She does not support the conflicts between the different styles in Pilates. Shari works to create what she calls “A Community of Help” that crosses over the divisions of style.
While Beginners are the most important clients to get in the door and hook…it’s your Intermediate clients that are the heart and soul of your business. You need to make sure that you’re always working to help them achieve their goals even while your goals for them might be even more interesting! In this workshop, we work on the true keys to Pilates success which is less about what exercises you give, but more about how you teach. The layering of “Intrinsic Actions” is what Pilates is about. Intrinsic actions are the internal actions that we want our clients to be able to incorporate into their full lives and any movement they do. We use Pilates exercises to practice these intrinsic actions. However…how we teach these actions is vital. Are you layering your cues? Are you teaching the appropriate actions correctly in the most effective order…teaching thematically rather than overwhelming your client or yourself. It’s time to delve into the actions of Pilates. Again…not the exercise…the intrinsic actions of the abdominals, back muscles, diaphragm, deep gluteals, adductors and shoulder girdle. It’s a thrill to find yourself at ease with thematic teaching, the Key to Pilates Success.
The Shoulder Girdle is a complex system. When I first started teaching, all I knew was "pull your wings down" and "crack a walnut". The more I study biomechanics, the more I know there's no down and no cracking. It's a delicate balance of bone, muscles, ligaments, tendons, fascia…and constant reassessing. Dynamic Stability is what we're looking for. Let's spend time studying where we're going with the shoulder girdle and how to get there in Pilates. We'll take time with anatomy and biomechanics, Pilates exercises, common ailments and all of your questions. Take a moment to review what you already know before the workshop...then we can grow from there.
Image is everything! Oh, gosh, not the superficial image stuff! The image cues you create for your client! That image is everything! In this Classtermind, we’ll discuss the value of using images! Pictures say a thousand words. Right? Yes! We’ll work through how to create truly iconic images that last with your clients through each session and their lives! When we create an astounding image that hits the nail on the head (great image, right?), then we can deeply affect our clients connections and movements! Join us!
Pilates teachers ask me more about the Sacroiliac Joint (SIJ) and its dysfunction than any other joint in the body. Whereas most of our clients struggle with their lumbar spine, a hip, a knee, it’s Pilates teachers who struggle most with their SI joints. Whether you or your client has SI joint dysfunction, it can be quite frustrating to manage. That is, until you learn what goes on at this joint, what can alter its balance and how to return it to balance...not just for the moment, but for the long-term. That is what we will discover in this workshop. Whether you teach on the mat, some or all apparatus, this workshop is for you!
